Global climate change is having a significant impact on biodiversity around the world. As Earth’s average temperature increases due to greenhouse gas emissions, many species face direct threats to their habitats, migration patterns and life cycles. Global warming causes extreme climate changes, such as floods, droughts and more intense storms. As the frequency and intensity of these events increases, many species are unable to adapt quickly, resulting in population declines and potential extinction. As temperatures rise, many plant and animal species are forced to adapt to new conditions or move to cooler areas. Species that cannot migrate, such as some species on remote islands, are at higher risk. For example, coral reefs are facing mass bleaching due to rising water temperatures, disrupting marine ecosystems and the species that depend on them. Coral reef loss could impact more than 500 million people who depend on marine resources to live. The impact of climate change can also be seen in animal migration patterns. Migratory birds, for example, can experience disruption when their arrival times are no longer synchronized with food availability. This leads to reduced survival and fertility rates. In addition, invasive species can spread more quickly into new, more comfortable habitats, displacing local species and disrupting the balance of the ecosystem. Climate change also affects genetic diversity. As species populations decline, genetic variation becomes limited. Low genetic variation can make species more susceptible to disease and reduce their ability to adapt to environmental changes. This loss of genetic diversity has the potential to reduce the capacity of ecosystems to provide essential services, such as food provision, climate regulation, and water cleaning. On the other hand, forests, as ecosystems rich in biodiversity, are also affected. Deforestation driven by climate change is making matters worse, causing habitat loss for millions of species. When forests burn or die due to increasingly extreme conditions, forest-dependent species lose their homes. Thus, effective conservation efforts are essential to protect threatened species. Therefore, the need for global action to reduce carbon emissions and conserve habitats is urgent. Maintaining biodiversity is not only important for ecosystems but also for human health, food security and climate resilience. Healthy biodiversity provides many benefits, including sources of medicines, improved air and water quality, and agricultural sustainability. By understanding the impacts of climate change on biodiversity, we can contribute more effectively to conservation efforts and mitigate future risks.
