The slot is a spot on a team’s defensive formation where a player may line up. It’s a good position for quicker players or shifty guys who can gain a step on the defender covering them. The defenders in the slot will usually play tight coverage, but they can get open quickly and make a big run to the ball carrier if necessary.

The term “slot” comes from the idea of a bolt or lock that holds something in place. It’s also the name of a gambling machine or reels where players can spin them to win prizes. There are many different types of slots available, ranging from traditional fruit machines to more advanced video games.
Slots can be configured to display data with one value per timestep or they can be indexed by an integer instead of the date. The latter type of slot is referred to as a “High Volatility” (HV) slot because it pays out wins more often than losses. However, the amount of money won is still capped at your initial deposit.
Scalar slots open in the Slot Viewer by default but can be undocked and shown in their own dialog if desired. Other types of slots, such as Periodic and Table slots, have special ornamentation in the Slot Viewer column heading to indicate their configuration and an additional icon/button that can be clicked to open them in their own dialogs.
